Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not only the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
